যাকাত’ আরবি শব্দ। এর আভিধানিক অর্থ বৃদ্ধি, পবিত্রতা, পরিচ্ছন্নতা ইত্যাদি। ইসলামি পরিভাষায় ধনী ব্যক্তিদের নিসাব (নির্ধারিত) পরিমাণ সম্পদ থাকলে নির্দিষ্ট অংশ গরিব ও অভাবী লােকদের মধ্যে বিতরণ করে দেওয়াকে যাকাত বলে। ইসলামের পাঁচটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ রুকনের মধ্যে যাকাত অন্যতম। কুরআন মজিদের বহু জায়গায় সালাতের সাথে যাকাত আদায়ের নির্দেশ দেওয়া হয়েছে। আল্লাহ তায়ালা বলেন:
অর্থ : “আর তােমরা নামায কায়েম কর এবং যাকাত প্রদান কর।” (সুরা আল-মুয্যাম্মিল, আয়াত ২০)
যাকাত হলাে দরিদ্রের আল্লাহ প্রদত্ত অধিকার। ধনীদের দয়া বা অনুগ্রহ নয়। বরং এটি আদায় করা ধনীদের
উপর ফরজ। এ প্রসঙ্গে আল্লাহ তায়ালা বলেন-
অর্থ : “তাদের (ধনীদের) ধন-সম্পদে অবশ্যই দরিদ্র ও বঞ্চিতদের অধিকার রয়েছে।” (সূরা আ-যারিয়াত, আয়াত ১৯)
যাকাত ফরজ হওয়ার শর্ত
মাল এক বছরকাল স্থায়ী থাকা: নিসাব পরিমাণ সম্পদ ব্যক্তির হাতে এক বছর কাল স্থায়ী না হলে, তার উপর যাকাত ফরজ হয় না।
জ্ঞানসম্পন্ন হওয়া: যাকাত ফরজ হওয়ার অন্যতম শর্ত হচ্ছে জ্ঞানসম্পন্ন হওয়া। জ্ঞানবুদ্ধিহীন তথা পাগলের উপর যাকাত ফরজ নয়।
বালেগ হওয়া: যাকাতদাতাকে অবশ্যই বালেগ তথা প্রাপ্তবয়স্ক হতে হবে। শিশু, নাবালেগ যত সম্পদের মালিকই হােক না কেন, বালেগ হওয়ার পূর্বে তার উপর যাকাত ফরজ হয় না।
প্রদেয় যাকাতের পরিমাণ নির্ধারণ
সাহিবে নিসাবের উপরই যাকাত ফরজ। নিসাবের পরিমাণ হলাে, সােনা কমপক্ষে সাড়ে সাত তােলা অথবা রুপা কমপক্ষে সাড়ে বায়ান্ন তােলা অথবা ঐ মূল্যের অর্থ বা সম্পদ। ঐ পরিমাণ সম্পদ কারো নিকট পূর্ণ এক বছরকাল স্থায়ী থাকলে ঐ সােনা, রুপা বা সম্পদের মূল্যের চল্লিশ ভাগের এক ভাগ যাকাত হিসাবে দেওয়া ফরজ। কিন্তু সম্পদ নিসাবের কম থাকলে যাকাত দেওয়া ফরজ নয়। এক বছর পূর্ণ হওয়ার আগেই সম্পদ নষ্ট হয়ে গেলে যাকাত দিতে হবে না। কারাে হাতে যদি বছরের প্রথমে নিসাব পরিমাণ সম্পদ থাকে, বছরের মাঝে কোনাে কারণে নিসাব হতে কমে যায় এবং বছর শেষে আবার নিসাব পরিমাণ সম্পদের মালিক হয়ে গেলে তাকে যাকাত দিতে হবে। যেহেতু তার উদ্ধৃত্ত টাকার পরিমাণ ৪ লক্ষ টাকা।এর ৪০ ভাগের এক ভাগ হলাে ১০ হাজার টাকা।সুতরাং তারা চাচার প্রদেয় যাকাতের পরিমাণ ১০ হাজার টাকা।

- অভাবগ্রস্ত বা ফকির।
- সম্বলহীন, মিসকিন।
