Origin of potato chips
William Kitchener’s book, The Cook Oracle, contains the first food recipe similar to potato chips, published in 1818. The book was one of the best-selling books in the United Kingdom and the United States. In 1822, the “shaving or fried potato” diet was developed, with the peel of a potato peeled off or cut into rounds while shaving.
Then, dry it on a clean cloth and fry it on fat or roasted meat. In the book, thin slices of roasted duck are fried in melted fat or transparent butter and dipped in salt or sprinkled with salt.
Production of potato chips
In the twentieth century, potato chips not only served as food prepared by restaurant ladies, but were also widely prepared for home consumption. The Dayton, a company based in Ohio, is considered to be the oldest chips company in the United States. Tri-Sam Potato Chips, a New England-based company founded in 1906 in Leominster, Massachusetts, called itself the first potato chips company in the United States.

According to Smith’s Potato Crisp Company Limited, founded in 1920, Frank Smith sold his chips in London by adding some salt to an oil-proof bag. And in 1950, while making the chips, the Irish Crisp Company, the owner of Toyota, Joe Spadd Murphy invented the technology of adding different flavors to the chips, and until then no flavor was added to the chips.
After some experimentation and problems, Murphy and his staff, Seamus Berkeley, created the world’s first flavored chips with flavors of cheese, onion, salt and vinegar. The first flavored potato chips in the United States, barbecue, were made and sold by 1954. In 1956, a company called Har’s brought the first flavored potato chips to Pennsylvania.
