এখানে যৌক্তিক সংজ্ঞা দানের সহজ উপায় হলাে, পদের আসন্নতম জাতিকে এবং ঐ বিশেষ পদটির বিভেদক লক্ষণকে উল্লেখ করা। যেমন – মানুষ পদের সংজ্ঞা হলাে সব মানুষ হয় বুদ্ধিবৃত্তিসম্পন্ন প্রাণী। এখানে মানুষ পদের আসন্নতম জাতি হলাে প্রাণি আর এ বিভেদক লক্ষণ হলাে বুদ্ধিবৃত্তি। সংজ্ঞা প্রসঙ্গে বলা যায়, কোনাে পদের সংজ্ঞা প্রদান করতে হলে জাত্যৰ্থ উল্লেখ করতে হবে। কিন্তু উদাহরণ দিতে গিয়ে আমরা কখনাে জাত্যর্থ, জাতি ও বিভেদক লক্ষণ উল্লেখ করি। তাই সংজ্ঞার প্রকৃতি প্রসঙ্গে আমদের জানা উচিত।

যৌক্তিক সংজ্ঞা :

সাধারণভাবে বলা হয়ে থাকে যে যৌক্তিক সংজ্ঞা অর্থ হলাে একটি পদের পূর্ণ জাত্যর্থকে সুস্পষ্ট ভাবে প্রকাশ করা। অর্থাৎ একটি পদের সম্পূর্ণ জাত্যর্থকে সুস্পষ্টভাবে ব্যক্ত করাই হলাে যৌক্তিক সংজ্ঞা। যেমন- মানুষ পদটি সংজ্ঞাদান করতে বলা হলে আমাদের মানুষ পদের জাত্যর্থের সুস্পষ্ট উল্লেখ করে বলতে হবে যে, “মানুষ হয় বুদ্ধিবৃত্তিসম্পন্ন প্রাণী। আমরা জানি মানুষ পদের জ্ঞাত্যর্থ হচ্ছে বুদ্ধিবৃত্তি ও প্রাণিত্ব। এখানে দুটিই গুণের উল্লেখ আছে। অন্যকোন গুনের উল্লেখ সংজ্ঞায় থাকতে পারে না।”

যৌক্তিক সংজ্ঞার নিয়মাবলি :

১)যে পদের সংজ্ঞা দিতে হবে সে পদের সম্পূর্ণ জ্ঞাত্যৰ্থ উল্লেখ করতে হবে, কমও না বেশিও না।

২) যে পদের সংজ্ঞা দিতে হবে সে পদটি থেকে সংজ্ঞাটি স্পষ্টতর হতে হবে। সংজ্ঞায় দুর্বোধ্য বা রূপক ভাষা ব্যবহার করা যাবে না।

৩)সংজ্ঞায় প্রতিশব্দ ব্যবহার করা যাবেনা।

৪)সংজ্ঞায় সদর্থক শব্দ ব্যবহার করতে হবে।

৫)যে পদটির সংজ্ঞা দিতে হিবে সে পদের সংজ্ঞার্থ পদ খুব সহজে রূপান্তরযােগ্য হতে হবে।

সংজ্ঞার নিয়ম লঙ্গনজনিত অনুপপত্তি :

১) ১ম নিয়মের অনুপপত্তি : ক) বাহুল্য সংজ্ঞাজনিত অনুপপত্তি:সংজ্ঞায় জাত্যর্থের অতিরিক্ত গুণ হিসেবে উপলক্ষণ উল্লেখ থাকলে, এ অনুপপত্তি ঘটে। যেমন- মানুষ হয় বুদ্ধিবৃত্তি ও বিচারশক্তি সম্পন্ন জীব। (এখানে বিচারশক্তি উপলক্ষণ যা অতিরিক্ত হিসেবে আছে) খ)অব্যাপক সংজ্ঞাজনিত অনুপপত্তি: সংজ্ঞায় অতিরিক্ত গুণ হিসেবে বিচ্ছেদ্য। অবান্তর লক্ষণ উল্লেখ থাকলে এ অনুপপত্তি হয়। যেমন- মানুষ হয় বুদ্ধিবৃত্তিসম্পন্ন সভ্য জীব। (এখানে সভ্য গুণটি বিচ্ছেদ্য অবান্তর লক্ষণ)

২) ২য় নিয়মের অনুপপত্তি : ক)রূপক সংজ্ঞাজনিত অনুপপত্তিঃ সংজ্ঞায় রূপক ভাষা ব্যবহার করলে এ অনুপপত্তি ঘটে।যেমন-সিংহ হয় পশুর রাজা। খ)দুর্বোধ্য সংজ্ঞাজনিত অনুপপত্তিঃ সংজ্ঞায় দুর্বোধ্য শব্দ ব্যবহার করলে এ অনুপপত্তি ঘটে।যেমন-বটবৃক্ষ হলাে জটাজুট লাঞ্চিত সবিতাতপ নিরােধক মহাস্থবির পাদপ।

৩) ৩য় নিয়মের অনুপপত্তি : ক)চক্রক সংজ্ঞাজনিত অনুপপত্তিঃ সংজ্ঞায় প্রতিশব্দ বা সমার্থক ব্যবহার করলে এ অনুপপত্তি ঘটে।যেমন- মানুষ হয় মানব।

৪) ৪র্থ নিয়মের অনুপপত্তি : ক)নঞর্থক সংজ্ঞাজনিত অনুপপত্তিঃ সংজ্ঞায় নঞর্থক শব্দ ব্যবহার করলে এ অনুপপত্তি ঘটে। যেমন- পাপ নয় পূণ্য।

(১নং ও ৫ং অনুপপত্তি একই) সংজ্ঞার সীমাবদ্ধতা আলােচনাঃ সীমাবদ্ধতাঃ ১। বৃহত্তর জাতির সংজ্ঞা দেওয়া যায় না। যেমনঃ দ্রব্য। ২। নামবাচক পদের সংজ্ঞা দেওয়া যায় না। যেমনঃ শাফিন। ৩। বিশিষ্ট গুনবাচক পদের সংজ্ঞা দেওয়া যায় না।
