Good news may come for MPO-listed teachers and employees in Bangladesh. The government has started a process to increase their festival allowance. Education authorities recently approved a proposal to raise the allowance by 10 percent. If the proposal gets final approval, teachers will receive 60 percent of their basic salary as festival allowance instead of the current 50 percent.
This proposal mainly targets teachers and staff who work in MPO-listed private schools, colleges, madrasas, and technical institutions. These teachers play a very important role in the education sector. Because of this, the government is considering better financial support for them.
Proposal Sent to Finance Ministry
The Education Ministry has already sent a special letter to the Finance Ministry. In this letter, the education minister requested approval for the increased allowance. The ministry believes that improving teachers’ financial benefits will help improve the overall quality of education in the country.
According to the proposal, teachers and employees currently receive festival allowance equal to 50 percent of their basic salary. The new plan suggests increasing this amount to 60 percent. That means teachers will receive an additional 10 percent allowance during festivals such as Eid.
More Than 6 Lakh Teachers May Benefit
Currently, more than 6 lakh MPO-listed teachers and employees work in private educational institutions across Bangladesh. These teachers depend on government support for their salary and benefits. If the proposal becomes effective, all of them will receive the increased festival allowance.
Education experts say this decision could help reduce financial pressure on teachers. Many teachers have been requesting better benefits for years. So this proposal has created hope among the education community.
Additional Budget Required
However, increasing the festival allowance will require extra government funding. According to official estimates, the government will need around 285.80 crore taka every year for the additional allowance.
Out of this amount, around 190 crore taka will be required for the Secondary and Higher Education Division. Another 95.80 crore taka will be needed for the Technical and Madrasa Education Division.
Why This Decision Matters
Teachers are one of the most important pillars of the education system. They work hard to educate millions of students across the country. But many teachers in private institutions still face financial challenges.
If the festival allowance increases, it will improve the living standard of teachers. It may also encourage them to focus more on teaching and professional responsibilities. In the long run, this step could help improve the overall quality of education in Bangladesh.
What Happens Next
Now the final decision depends on the Finance Ministry. If the ministry approves the proposal and allocates the required budget, the increased allowance may start from the 2025–2026 fiscal year.
Teachers across the country are now waiting for the final approval. If implemented, this change will bring financial relief to hundreds of thousands of educators working in MPO-listed institutions.
For teachers and education staff, this could become an important step toward better financial support and recognition of their contribution to the nation’s education system.
