The Eid holiday for government employees in Bangladesh will start after office hours on March 16. The government has taken this step to make Eid travel easier for millions of people.
Every year, a large number of people leave Dhaka and other big cities before Eid. Because of this, buses, trains, and highways become very crowded. To reduce travel pressure, the government decided to extend the holiday period.
Continuous Eid Vacation Expected
According to the official holiday calendar, the main Eid holidays are scheduled from March 19 to March 23. These days were already declared as government holidays for Eid-ul-Fitr.
In addition, March 17 is a public holiday for Shab-e-Qadr. Now the government has also approved a holiday on March 18. This creates a long and continuous break.
If everything stays as planned, government employees will enjoy a 7-day holiday from March 17 to March 23.
Since offices will close after work on March 16, many employees will start their Eid journey from that day.
Why the Government Extended the Holiday
The main reason behind this decision is to reduce travel congestion during Eid.
During Eid holidays, millions of people travel from cities to their hometowns. Roads become crowded. Train stations and bus terminals also experience heavy pressure.
By giving an extra holiday before Eid, people can travel on different days. This helps reduce traffic jams and makes travel safer and more comfortable.
Possible Eid Date in 2026
Eid-ul-Fitr depends on the sighting of the moon. According to current calculations, Eid may be celebrated on March 20 or March 21, 2026.
The government fixed the holiday schedule based on a possible 30-day Ramadan. However, the final Eid date will be confirmed after moon sighting.
Opportunity for a Longer Vacation
Government workers may even enjoy a longer break if they manage their leave smartly.
After the Eid holidays end on March 23, offices will reopen on March 24 and March 25. But March 26 is a national holiday for Independence Day.
Then the weekly weekend follows on March 27 and March 28.
So if someone takes leave on March 24 and 25, they could enjoy a very long vacation of around 12 days.
What This Means for Eid Travelers
This extended holiday will help many people travel home without rush.
People can leave the city in stages instead of traveling all on the same day. This may reduce road accidents, overcrowded transport, and ticket shortages.
Authorities also expect better management at bus terminals, railway stations, and ferry ghats during the Eid travel period.
Final Decision from the Government
The additional holiday proposal was approved in a cabinet meeting. After approval, March 18 was officially declared a public holiday.
As a result, government offices will remain closed from March 17 to March 23. Regular office activities will start again on March 24.
Summary
- Last working day before Eid: March 16
- Shab-e-Qadr holiday: March 17
- Additional holiday: March 18
- Main Eid holidays: March 19 – March 23
- Total continuous holiday: 7 days
This decision will help government employees celebrate Eid with their families and travel home with less stress.
