A day after the massive clashes at Chandigarh University, police said no offensive video of the students was shot or the accused female student was sent for it. The woman sent the video of herself to her boyfriend and both were arrested, police said. The row at the university in Punjab’s Mohali was apparently triggered by rumours, which sparked panic among freshmen who did not know each other, police indicated. But the students were not satisfied and the protest continued in the university till late evening despite the assurance of further investigation by the police by a special investigation team.
The woman, a resident of the hostel, was arrested and charged under the IT Act. Her boyfriend, Sunny Mehta, 23, who works in a travel agency, was also arrested from Shimla. A second person, who works in a bakery, was also arrested from Shimla, police said. Following the protests, the Punjab Police formed a special investigation team headed by a senior IPS officer to investigate the students’ complaints. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann promised a high-level inquiry into the incident.

The female student, who was arrested for sharing a video from another hostel, was apparently blackmailed for sharing a ‘private video, sources said. The two male accused, Sunny Mehta and Ronkaj Verma, threatened to make the private video of the female student viral unless she filmed it in the common washroom of her hostel inmates. So far, all three have been arrested by the Punjab Police. A court in Mohali’s Kharar sent all of them to seven-day police custody.
Further, the Punjab government constituted a three-member all-women Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the matter. Police said an FIR has been registered under Section 354-C of the IPC and IT Act for travel and further investigation is underway. Students of Chandigarh University staged a massive protest against the incident. On Monday, the students called off their protest and apologized to the administration. They alleged that the police used force on the protesting students.

As students have complained that no action has been taken against the university management so far. Times Now has obtained evidence that shows that women’s washrooms in the university were not properly secured. The girls’ hostel which is now at the center of controversy was earlier occupied by male students. Later when it became a hostel for girls. The toilets were not renovated such that the open tops of the bathing chambers were sealed. Images from the campus show they are open to date.
Meanwhile, students of Chandigarh University said on Sunday that they had complained about the matter but the authorities did not take any action. The students also complained that the university authorities have threatened to suspend those who are agitating. A Chandigarh University student said on Sunday, “Initially the authorities didn’t believe us. But when they saw the protests growing, they finally gave in. The college authorities said they were protecting us and action was being taken.”

Honorable Chief Minister of Punjab Bhagwant Mann has issued strict orders against the girl who went viral in private video of Chandigarh University girls. Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal also called the incident “serious and shameful” after the students’ video went viral. So it is right to keep peace and refrain from taking any wrong decision about his life.
